イギリスの学校とのやりとりの中で他愛もない話題や近況報告が送られてくる事があります。定期的に来る書類やレポート類と違い、ちょっとした日常が垣間見えて、本題よりもそちらの方が印象に残ることがままあります。
渡邊オフィスの生徒が在籍する学校の中でも最も北方面に位置する学校のひとつからは頻繁に学校周辺の美しい景色や構内イベントの写真が送られてきます。

先日は同校のある建物のリニューアルについてのニュースが送られて来ました。

これはペッパーポットと呼ばれている学校の敷地の果ての果てに位置する小さな建造物で、写真のようにこの数十年間廃墟でした。しかし今年に入りリニューアルされ生まれ変わりました。

ペッパーポットとは「胡椒びん」という意味で、言われてみればずんぐりとした縦長な形が似ています。
この建物が出来た経緯には諸説あるようですが、100年ほど前の地主が結核を患った娘の隔離、療養の場所として作ったという説が有力だそうです。当時は結核の治療には新鮮な空気を吸う事が良いとされていて、その為ペッパーポットにはたくさんの窓があったようで、その当時の姿を再現しています。今後は地域の人たちが山歩きの際に休憩できたり、同校の生徒が天体観測や植物採取のフィールドワークなどで活動の拠点に利用できるようになります。小さい建物ですが周りには何もありませんので、これから活躍の場が広がりそうです。
